Austin is on a RVCA trip, so I picked one this week. Niel Blender was the coolest cat when I was a kid. Not the best trick-wise, but awesome in his attitude towards skating.
Speaking of the RVCA trip, see photos~! DAY 1 and DAY 2... And scope the new ad.
What!? Not the best trick wise? Has an air named after him. What about the blunt? Total lip trick innovator. Neil and Lance were the rulers. No one comes anywhere close to them in their prime. Artists and skaters.

Thanks for these! I love that you gave us some commentary; I'd always be up to reading more from you *or* Austin concerning the video picks.

I just wanted to point out that we has not the "best" skater. That is totally a matter of opinion, of course. But technically T. Hawk and Cab, etc. were "Better" trick-wise. My point of course is that regardless of that, he was awesome for how he approached skateboarding, with innovation, style, and art. I agree with you, but I also stand by my comments in the post.

here's Blender by the barrel-full:
He was the first pro to do his own graphics. Neil was also one the first to completely shun contests circa '89. Besides his smooth style, just think of all the tricks he invented: lien air, method air, gay twist, no comply, jolly mamba, new deal, truth or consequences, hand outs, etc. Ed, BTW, Neil is stoked on your giant wooden head paintings. He said it was the best thing you've done. -Jason

Thanks Jason! Tell Neil that makes my day. He has always been an inspiration to me.

Ed, I had a jpeg of the "Heads in a Row" photo as my desk top image. Neil saw it and tripped out on it and was asking what they were made of. I told him that I thought they were MDF wood. Is that right? Neil's been working on these strange little boards he calls "Roller Customs". They are tiny completes with custom graphics and shaped by Neil. Some are made just like tiny surf boards out of fiberglass others are redwood. He always busy with painting, lino-prints or various other stuff. Take care.

that tag run is one of the best runs ever. him rolling arund on the ground reminded me of that Me,Skateboard skit Dave Carney did in the Crap video. Extra points for having a can of paint in his pocket while rolling around too. I wish there were more Blenders, but then maybe it wouldn't be so special.
